CreativeJUUS Business Card design

“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

CreativeJUUS Business Cards

So here we are at week 16 and I’ve taken the opportunity for this Creative Monday to show off my latest business card design. This was my first crack at designing a card for my new(ish) brand identity and I quite like the way the swirl is incorporated into the piece. I also wanted to make sure to include the “American citizen, born in Iceland…” blurb as I find it’s always a nice ice-breaker when meeting new people!

So I guess this week I wanted to mess with your eyes because this was the crazy thing that came out of my brain. Looking at a few Saul Bass posters I just wanted to break something down into basic shapes and I love the font ‘Hurry Up’ that I used. Don’t stare too long… it might just pull you in!

The Bare-Knuckle Boxer Poster

This week’s Creative Mondays piece provided a chance for me to experiment with some 3D graphics software. I was alerted on Twitter about an offer that DAZ 3D announced where they were giving away three products for free for a limited time. Not one to throw away a bargain I took the opportunity to download the software and get stuck in. The first program that caught my eye was DAZ Studio 4 which gives you the ability to create a variety of three dimensional characters. The poses and expressions along with the lighting and texture capabilities are pretty impressive and soon enough I had an idea to create a mock poster of which you see in this post!

The Bare-Knuckle Boxer Close-up

After a bit of tweaking I set the character into the pose I wanted, gave him a bit of a tough expression and tried to light him realistically. I then rendered the subject and imported him into Photoshop where I did a bit more colour work and added blood/bruising along with some drops of sweat for realism. As far as this first attempt goes it’s a fairly simplistic concept but with more time and practice the 3D software could work out to be a very handy tool!

This week’s work is more of a plug for some exciting news I have for a Creative Mondays piece I made a few weeks ago! I’ve been aware of the site Banana Skins for some time and a few other designers that I follow on Twitter have been adding their awesome designs to the iPhone skin shop. I didn’t create ‘Beginning’ to be an iPhone skin but once I’d finished the design I thought it would fit quite nicely with the dimensions. I found a Photoshop template of an iPhone 4s (available here) and proceeded to mock up the design onto the phone.

Once finished a dropped an email over to the guys at Banana Skins and the next day got an email stating that they’d be happy to use my design! Needless to say I was pretty happy and a couple days later my design sits up on the site along with the others!

So if you’re in need of some stylish design skins for your iPhone look no further than the Banana Skins site. So many to choose from!
