“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

Over the Thanksgiving weekend I had some time to relax. My brother and my sister came to visit, my wife cooked an amazing turkey dinner for all of us and we decided to fire up the old Nintendo. We went right back to the beginning and played through the original Super Mario Bros. game. Simply put, it was awesome. Playing as those famous digital plumbers brought back great memories and also added a few new ones. One in particular came about whilst I was tackling the very last level and about to face Bowser to win the game. My sister, watching my struggle against the maze-like castle as a small Luigi simply stated, “You’re never gonna beat Bowser if you’re the small man…” and as soon as I heard it I thought it would look great on a t-shirt. You’re up against the odds, you wish you had that fireball power and you’re just about to face a hopping mad, fire spitting, multiple hammer throwing Bowser. It reminded me of the fun we would have sitting around taking turns playing the game and the banter that would go back and forth so I wanted to capture a piece of that.

The second design was merely an experimentation with the fireball that Bowser spits out at you. I love the simplicity of the pixal art created in these games and the fireball design in particular looks great stretched across the shirt. It was originally going to be used in the first design but it became a bit too complex and I opted to leave it out.

Once again inspiration can come from the greatest of places.
