Creative Mondays 45 – Run Your Jewels

Run Your Jewels Remix

“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

Run Your Jewels is a bi-weekly competition/project created by designer Justin Maller that allows designers to upload a remix of a selected piece of digital art. The entries are then voted on and a prize is usually offered to the winner. The project is currently in its tenth round and it seems to be getting bigger and better.

So I decided last week that I’d try my hand at a remix and with the template image being provided by Rik Oostenbroek this looked like a lot of fun! My mind was immediately drawn to the shapes and the smooth textures of his work and I could see a giant ice cream literally melting off the screen. Pushing it further, I decided an ice cream planet would suffice and created the cone, sprinkles, the candy corn spaceships and last but not least the cherry on the top.

I love the concept of a collective group of designers/illustrators experimenting with design and contributing to a project. There are really no boundaries to what you can create in these remixes (as you can see on the site) and this type of practice can enable you to explore techniques that you’ve never attempted before.

Basically it’s all about being creative.

Be sure to check out all the artists work on the site and if you want go ahead and vote for your favourite!
