Creative Mondays 215 – The Revenant Poster

What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

It’s rare that I’ll design a poster before I’ve seen a film but I’ve made an exception for The Revenant. From what I’ve seen and so far heard about this film it sounds like a captivating story and one that is beautifully shot. I’ve taken some inspiration from the trailer here but I was just playing around with some imagery and an illustrative style that I’d like to progress in the future.

Leo’s getting the Oscar for this one finally yeah?

Okay so looking at this week and last week’s post, you might think there’s a ‘punishment’ theme going on but I assure it was all by accident. I had just watched the Coen brothers remake of ‘True Grit’ (with the awesome Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn) which is one of the rare films that I think a remake actually works as well as the original. I was inspired and wanted to create an image that I saw captured in the film.

The scene lent itself in particular to my style of silhouette design and so a quick sketch later and some Photoshop work and here we have it!

*EDIT*
I was playing around with the colour on this piece and put together an alternate that I quite like.

If there was an entire post dedicated to a few words, this week it would simply be Star Wars Battlefront. EA’s long anticipated first- and third-person shooter arrived last week and summed up most of my weekend. It’s the game I wanted to play as a kid and it’s the closest I’m going to get to being in the Star Wars universe (unless I get to be an extra in a film…).

Naturally, inspired by the game I thought I’d create a poster in the style similar to my ‘Force Awakens‘ designs. So those awesome Snowspeeders became my focal point on the incredible ice planet Hoth engaging in an almighty battle against the Empire… I could go on. But I think I’m going to go and play some Battlefront.

Usually on Creative Mondays I’m designing something that’s pretty close to me. Perhaps a film I’ve just seen at the cinema or maybe a video-game I’ve picked up. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen ‘They Live’ but as Mondo Monday are playing the film I thought I’d add my version to the mix. If you haven’t heard of Mondo Monday (why not) they’re all about reviving cult/b-movie cinema, throwing down the odd quiz and sometimes showcasing comedians!

It’s nice to step back from something I’m not so familiar with and push the comfort zone. I also thought to try a poster with an alternate colour and I thought it would be cool to show the line-work that went into this piece, something I’m still getting to grips with in Adobe Illustrator.

After a crazy week last week, I’m back with some ‘normal’ design work and this one was so much fun to make! Halo 5: Guardians came out last week, I picked up and shot my way through the campaign and I’m currently getting stuck into the multiplayer. While the game still doesn’t quite match that of Halo 3, (I know this isn’t a review site) I always enjoy diving into the Halo universe and seeing the creature designs and the fantastic worlds the developers have created.

The latest in the series is no different and I wanted to reflect some of that in my latest design.
