Creative Mondays 188 – Moving Home

“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

It’s been an exciting and busy seven days since my last post. Packing boxes, organising furniture, setting up my new office in my brand new home! Yep, super excited to announce the headquarters of Creative Mondays has itself a little office space in a house all of it’s own! My old flat (rented for ten years!) will certainly be missed, mainly for it’s ideal location near the sea but my wife and I simply outgrew the space and needed an upgrade.

So this week has been a pretty big change in a lot of ways and thinking of something to post this week was kinda challenging. Do I create something in Photoshop around the move? Do I ignore what’s going on around me and finish that damn ‘Wonders of the Universe’ (it’s coming soon) series?  As I was reflecting and looking for inspiration I often check through any photos I’ve taken and two shots stood out to me. The first was within my flat as we were cleaning it out and I had a moment to sit and stare out the window thinking about the last ten years and the second was on one of my many trips around the waterfront and seeing the one landmark that has always been around me, Smeaton’s Tower.

As much as I will miss my old flat, I look forward to the future and the exciting times ahead!

I haven’t really experimented with anything lately just for the sake of experimenting so I figured I’d dig up an old quote I liked and play around with a few typefaces. I’m constantly scouring the web looking for awesome imagery and fonts for inspiration and this was a perfect platform to simply ‘play’.

Another super busy week passes by and this time I got the chance to go to Barcelona for the OFFF Festival (Celebrating it’s 15th year!). What’s OFFF you say?

Taken from the OFFF website:

“It is more than just a Festival hosting innovative and international speakers, it is more than a meeting point for all talents around the world to collaborate, it is more than feeding the future.

OFFF is a community inviting all those who are eager to learn to participate and get inspired in a three-day journey of conferences, workshops, activities and performances. What is it about exactly? It’s a combination of Offline/Online designers, Motion Designers, Thinkers, Sound Designers, Graphic Designers, Theorists, Developers, Professionals, Students… Putting the titles aside, OFFF is made for the curious.”

There was so much to see on this trip, and I’ll probably do a full round-up when I can pull together all my notes but I thought I’d share a few photos and things I created during the three days of inspiration!

The two doodles below were illustrated in my sketchbook and then photographed using Adobe’s new ‘Adobe Shape’ tool on my iPhone. Once they are photographed they become vectored images that you can directly import into Adobe Illustrator with the use of a Creative Cloud account.

Finally, seeing as I brought my GoPro with me and didn’t want to waste it, I put together a short video of my final evening and trip home. Just a little send off reminding me of an awesome trip!

February 19th marked the 25th Anniversary of the first version of Photoshop. I would have been about 10 years old when it was launched and although I didn’t know it yet, Adobe’s software would become a major application in my life as a designer. I believe Photoshop 3.0 was the first version I used (installed from 6 floppy disks if I’m correct) and since then I haven’t stopped creating in some way or another.

So this week to celebrate all those years, I put together a few simple designs just as a little thank you and to show my appreciation. You can check out the official anniversary site to find out more about the celebration.

I love working on abstract ideas and just creating for creating’s sake. I put pencil to paper and sketched out the beginning of this piece during one of my lunchtime breaks at work. Taking it further once I got home, I scanned the image in and imported it into Illustrator where I recreated the shapes using the pen tool. Once I isolated each shape I brought the design into Photoshop where I could develop the image with a three dimensional look.
