Creative Mondays 215 – The Revenant Poster

What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

It’s rare that I’ll design a poster before I’ve seen a film but I’ve made an exception for The Revenant. From what I’ve seen and so far heard about this film it sounds like a captivating story and one that is beautifully shot. I’ve taken some inspiration from the trailer here but I was just playing around with some imagery and an illustrative style that I’d like to progress in the future.

Leo’s getting the Oscar for this one finally yeah?

A couple of years ago I was playing around with an idea to create a GTA V Atari advertisement. I pulled together images from a stock photo site and created a mock design. Just last week I put together another Star Wars poster (inspired by the recent Battlefront game) and the illustration reminded me of that retro artwork style that featured on some of the game cartridges.

I think the Snowspeeders look pretty damn awesome as the cover image and I figured I’d try and recreate this with another recent video game poster I designed.

I’d really like to see a resurgence in video game artwork, it seems to be happening to some degree in the film industry. It was always about capturing the imagination of a game and if the amazing artwork could sell a game that consisted of only a few pixels, that in itself is pretty impressive.

And just for fun I figured I’d add another poster to the mix.

Sometimes you try things out and they work, sometimes they don’t. Whatever the result it’s always good to give something another try. Motivated by my first attempt at some polygon artwork, I decided to have another go at it, this time creating a poster design for the film ‘Foxcatcher’. Admittedly I put a little more time into this piece, making the polygon’s work more effectively to create the shapes and shades of Steve Carell’s face.

I did create an alternate poster for this piece but I’m still undecided on it. It may be a bit busy and the detail is lost but I may revisit the idea again some time.

I haven’t managed to catch many of the Oscar-nominated “best films” this year but I made it a point to see the musical-drama ‘Whiplash’ starring Miles Teller and J. K. Simmons. First off let me tell you, this film was pretty intense. There are fantastic performances from both Simmons and Teller and an interesting story that could draw anyone in who wants to achieve something to a level that most never reach.

This film is about getting you out of your comfort zone almost from the start and I wanted to convey that with my design. Getting close and personal and with a title that simply shouts out it’s name, it’s certainly a film to be heard just as much as it is seen.

Last week I caught Christopher Nolan’s epic sci-fi flick Interstellar. Man the scale on this film was huge and there was a lot to take in (for almost 3 hours) but for the most part I really enjoyed the story.

Inspired by the film I decided to knock up a poster design but rather than create it in Photoshop as I usually do, I tried my hand at Illustrator and I quite like the outcome. The composition was tricky and there are a few things I might revisit on this design but it was good to break away from the norm and challenge myself!
