Creative Mondays 215 – The Revenant Poster

What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

It’s rare that I’ll design a poster before I’ve seen a film but I’ve made an exception for The Revenant. From what I’ve seen and so far heard about this film it sounds like a captivating story and one that is beautifully shot. I’ve taken some inspiration from the trailer here but I was just playing around with some imagery and an illustrative style that I’d like to progress in the future.

Leo’s getting the Oscar for this one finally yeah?

Okay so looking at this week and last week’s post, you might think there’s a ‘punishment’ theme going on but I assure it was all by accident. I had just watched the Coen brothers remake of ‘True Grit’ (with the awesome Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn) which is one of the rare films that I think a remake actually works as well as the original. I was inspired and wanted to create an image that I saw captured in the film.

The scene lent itself in particular to my style of silhouette design and so a quick sketch later and some Photoshop work and here we have it!

*EDIT*
I was playing around with the colour on this piece and put together an alternate that I quite like.

Usually on Creative Mondays I’m designing something that’s pretty close to me. Perhaps a film I’ve just seen at the cinema or maybe a video-game I’ve picked up. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen ‘They Live’ but as Mondo Monday are playing the film I thought I’d add my version to the mix. If you haven’t heard of Mondo Monday (why not) they’re all about reviving cult/b-movie cinema, throwing down the odd quiz and sometimes showcasing comedians!

It’s nice to step back from something I’m not so familiar with and push the comfort zone. I also thought to try a poster with an alternate colour and I thought it would be cool to show the line-work that went into this piece, something I’m still getting to grips with in Adobe Illustrator.

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a crazy Back to the Future fan. I’m listening to the soundtrack right now as I type this. It’s one of those films where I’ll sit there and annoy people by spewing out the lines one after another (I know how annoying that is but this film is in my blood).

Seeing as we’re finally upon the week that Marty McFly travels to the future I felt it only right to design something for one of my favourite franchises. Oh and on Wednesday the 21st I’ll be checking out all three films back-to-back. Six hours of me annoying the hell out of my wife probably dressed up as Marty McFly. I’m such a nerd.

As a starting point I like to concept of having the iconic character silhouetted but I want to revisit these to add more details and clean the images up a bit.

That vast Martian landscape has a way of making me sit up and pay attention. There’s something about the ‘Red Planet’ that captivates my mind and I had been long anticipating the latest Ridley Scott film ‘The Martian’ since I heard about it earlier this year. After seeing it last week I wanted to put together a design using some photo-manipulation techniques, gathering stock photos from Wadi Rum in Jordan where the film was shot.
