“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

Sometimes inspiration can come from the strangest of places. Just today someone I knew sadly passed away. There’s often a moment of reflection and everything gets put into perspective. We’ve only got so much time so let’s make the most of it.

I found this amazing image that I used for the background of this piece. You can find it here.

So as most probably already know, the Olympics in 2012 are taking place in London and the buzz is catching up pretty fast. With less than 100 days to go there will be plenty of talk, advertising and celebrations of one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

I wanted to create something to mark the games to use the iconic Olympic Rings in the process. The background scene is a stock photo (by aschaeffer) I found and you can see it here. The sky was simply clouds that I made with the brush tool and added behind the image of London. I then used the ‘Oil Paint’ option and adjusted the levels of the image so as to create a silhouetted London.

Was great fun experimenting with the options in Photoshop CS6 for this piece. I hope to do a lot more in the future!

This week’s design was a pretty big one for me. It’s been over a year since I posted what was to be my first self-initiated poster onto this site. A Star Had To Die became one of my popular posts (and amazingly still is) and it continues to inspire and motivate always giving me that little push I need when I’m in a ‘designer block’.

I’m therefore really excited to show off my latest in what hopes to be a continued series of “Wonders of the Universe/Solar System” posters. I had been meaning to do a follow up design for a while now and Mars just seemed the perfect planet to go to next. The quotes were actually taken from both Wonders series and I just love the descriptive nature of each. Almost like a slogan that advertises the planet as THE destination to find life.

The red planet has always fascinated me, from stories of science fiction and alien lifeforms to when we managed to send rovers to scout and explore the surface producing incredible photographs of a world we’d never properly seen before . This planet may well be our future home and it could also unlock some incredible stories about other forms of life in the universe.

This week’s inspiration is once again plucked from my brain out of the many odd things I’ll either say or think about during the course of a week. It was actually a few weeks ago when this particular idea sprouted. The weather was unusually warm (for March) and the phrase just popped into my head. This piece was the result and it was created entirely within the new Photoshop CS6 beta. Lots of styles added to the text layers (the ice text in particular) and a few useful brushes I managed to find whilst scouring the web!
