Creative Mondays 197 – Blade

Some of the detail is lost in the smaller version.

“What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

I’ll admit, Blade was a character I had no real interest in until I saw Wesley Snipes play him all those years ago. The first two films I loved (the third not so much) and I think I’d like to see Snipes take one more stab at the part. Blade was by no means the kind of Marvel blockbuster that we see today but it paved the way and was Marvel’s first box office success, setting the stage for more to follow. He deserves his spot amongst the icons!

I’m really hoping Ryan Reynolds does some justice to the Deadpool character. I won’t speak of the hideous appearance of the so-called ‘Merc with a Mouth’ in Wolverine: Origins, it just isn’t worth it. So the anticipation is high that they can bring another Rated R Marvel character to the big screen.

Meanwhile, I figured I should give this guy a place in the silhouette collection. Two thumbs way up.

With San Diego Comic-Con wrapped up for another year, the newest, hottest trailers were bestowed upon the viewing public and fans alike. Like with the Ant-Man trailer I discussed in last week’s post, the first Batman v Superman trailer released did nothing to whet my appetite and I could have easily passed on the film. Thankfully Comic-Con trailer put something out there (if not maybe a little too much) that intrigued me.

I’m loving the metal bat suit and the more I see of Affleck in the Bruce Wayne/Batman role the more I like. Here’s hoping the film delivers!

Doctor Otto Octavius, one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains get’s the silhouette style treatment in this week’s Creative Mondays. After doing several superheroes I thought I’d have a crack at a villain and Doctor Octopus has the iconic look that I think applies to this style perfectly.

I built up the imagery in Photoshop but the metallic arms were a little tricky and I decided I could get the necessary detail I needed in Illustrator. For now, I’ll be continuing with the superhero designs but I may throw in a few other villains every now and then.

Continuing with the Marvel Superheroes theme from last week, I thought it would be fun to create a Thor poster in the silhouette style.

For a long time now I’ve wanted to create a poster series with all my favourite Marvel Superheroes and this style allows the signature elements of each Marvel character to stand out on the page. Having so many unique heroes in their locker enables me to try this out with a whole host of subjects. Stay tuned for more!
