Creative Mondays 214 – True Grit Poster

True Grit Poster

What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

Okay so looking at this week and last week’s post, you might think there’s a ‘punishment’ theme going on but I assure it was all by accident. I had just watched the Coen brothers remake of ‘True Grit’ (with the awesome Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn) which is one of the rare films that I think a remake actually works as well as the original. I was inspired and wanted to create an image that I saw captured in the film.

The scene lent itself in particular to my style of silhouette design and so a quick sketch later and some Photoshop work and here we have it!

*EDIT*
I was playing around with the colour on this piece and put together an alternate that I quite like.

Star Wars and comic books. I can’t get those two subjects out of my head. So if you can’t beat ’em, create a remix with Boba Fett as the Punisher! Mixing my favourite bounty hunter with Marvel’s awesome antihero. I want to see this as a comic!

This image was built from scratch using Photoshop and Illustrator and using reference images of Boba Fett I found online.

Creative Mondays 211 – David Bowie

It’s a sad day when someone who has influenced so many leaves us. But there’s no reason for the sadness to be the overwhelming emotion. Celebration of a life lived is also important and like many others marking today’s news of David Bowie passing away I wanted to create something to tribute the artist.

I don’t claim to be Bowie’s biggest fan or know all of his catalogue but I can appreciate the creativity and passion the man had for music and art. Reinventing himself and producing original music for over four decades is something of an achievement not to mention influencing the ‘Glam and Punk Rock’ movements in the 70’s.

And that’s the beauty of his legacy. For what I missed in the past I can still revisit and his music will be able to live on well into the future.

You’ll have to forgive me. I’ve just got back from watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the second time so my mind is sort of on other things. This week’s design work was actually created a few weeks ago but I hadn’t managed to post it up yet.

Inspired by yet another Mondo Monday night, I thought I’d revisit my earlier attempt at a Home Alone poster and try something in a style that I’ve been working on more recently. This was a tricky one but I wanted to capture a moment in time from the film and I love that ride down the stairs on the sled. It’s something I’ve always wanted to try (never been brave enough).

The piece was started in Illustrator, working out the basic composition and brought into Photoshop for a few touch ups and extra details.

Sometimes it’s great to revisit a style and just create something out of nothing. I’ve been working on a great deal of silhouette work over the past year but most of it inspired by Superheroes, films or even games that I enjoy. Inspiration this week was the blank canvas and whatever I could think of. I think there’s a good series that could come out of this, something I may be working on next year.
