Creative Mondays 213 – Boba Fett – Punishment

What is Creative Mondays?

Monday’s are always a drag. The start of a new week, you have to go back to that routine of going to bed early/get up early. If (like me) you have to commute then you prepare for that long journey into work and that long journey back for the first time after a nice two day break.

So to kick off those lousy Mondays, I’m going to get my creative mind flowing in a positive way. Creative Mondays. A chance for me to show off something unfinished or finished that I’ve been working on throughout the previous week.”

Star Wars and comic books. I can’t get those two subjects out of my head. So if you can’t beat ’em, create a remix with Boba Fett as the Punisher! Mixing my favourite bounty hunter with Marvel’s awesome antihero. I want to see this as a comic!

This image was built from scratch using Photoshop and Illustrator and using reference images of Boba Fett I found online.

So you’re reading on this on the rare occasion that a Creative Mondays falls on a Tuesday! A previous engagement pulled me away so we’ll have to settle for some second day of the week creativity. Sometimes the work I do in my 9 to 5 job crosses over into my self-initiated projects and vice-versa. The past week I’ve been working with isometric imagery within Illustrator and I thought I’d play around with this concept a little more. It’s very different from my usual style but it’s good to get out of my comfort zone and try something new.

I haven’t really gotten stuck into Illustrator in a while so I felt the need to try some character creation. I started by drawing the scientist you see before you not really knowing where the illustration was going but as it developed I soon came up with the idea of turning the image into a Jekyll and Hyde scene.

A couple weeks back after seeing Pixar’s Monster’s University I was inspired to create my own monster character illustration. I posted ‘George’ up as one of my Creative Mondays pieces but if I’m honest I was never really to fond of the piece. The idea was there but my illustration style didn’t match the feeling or the look of the other characters.

Never one to give up on an idea (no matter how good or bad) I decided to go back to the drawing board and create George again, but this time in Photoshop. I worked on his overall look a bit more and the expression and while I still like elements of the original George I’m much happier with the direction the new improved version turned out. To me he fits better within the “Monsters” universe and I can’t get over that toothy grin!

It’s a good lesson to go back and revisit old work and see what you can change, there’s always something to improve on as you’ll have a fresh perspective.

During the last week I went to see the latest Pixar film Monsters University. Overall I quite enjoyed it (I’ll save my review for another day!) but one thing that stood out to me was the variety of monsters this time around. There were so many different creatures created, much more than the original film.

I’ve always loved doodling and sketching crazy characters in my spare time and I figured I’d try and flesh out one of my monster creations and share him with the world! This piece was sketched out, scanned in and traced in Illustrator. I then imported the file into Photoshop where I added some of the monster skin texture and background image for effect.
